This is the logo for the National Football League's Washington Redskins. They are partially and temporarily changing the logo to something slightly less offensive next season.(an arrowhead and feathers...) Most American Indians apparently hate the old logo, and see it as a symbol of intolerance and racism.. There are several other professional teams that bear equally offensive symbols as their team logos. We've got Kansas City Chiefs, Cleveland Indians, and Atlanta Braves. Just like the confederate flag, all of these teams vehemently refuse to change these silly symbols. They claim that it doesn't hurt anyone. I wonder who they feel will be hurt if they were to be changed. The old Browns changed their name to the Ravens, and the earth did not quake. The old Oilers changed their name to the Titans, and the sky did not fall. Rather than take advantage of all of the kudos and good will that could be fostered by changing these names to something more palatable, they prefer to "fight the good fight" alongside a bunch of highhanded bigots, afraid of the slippery slope of political correctness.
I don't know how the Vikings and the Buccaneers feel about their depiction in the professional sports arenas. Hell, the Bears and the Bengals might take exception with their portraits too, if PITA gets a voice. A lot of people already call that Washington team, the "Skins", so why not just acquiesce - just this once, and go with that nick name, or pick another. Nobody honestly believes that the Rednecks will boycott the games or the teams, as long as the park will beserving up beer.
Hey! There's an idea. Let's change the name to the Washington Rednecks, since it's just a name, and not hurtful to anybody. We've even designed a suitable logo for the new venture. How's that for a proud tradition?
This issue is actually a real one, and it preys on the passions of those on both sides of the issue. A group of Native Americans have taken the matter in hand. Check It Out
