1979 12: Noon - Trotwood, Ohio: As a real estate salesman, I was given a key and permission to show a home to my customers. A neighbor took exception with the fact that I was showing the house to a black family, and called the police came over, drew a pistol, and held us until the police arrived. The police diffused the situation, and told us that we should contact the selling broker and have him come back with us. I told the cop that I wanted to file a complaint against the guy for brandishing a weapon on us. The cop said that he would not file a complaint, and told me, "If it had been him, he would have shoot somebody…" Should I have filed a complaint?
1982 11:30 PM - West Hollywood: I'm sitting at the bus stop at Holloway and LaCienga. Two cops pull up and swing their cruiser onto the curb. They tossed me up against the car, frisked me up and down, and threatened me because I happened to have my hands in my pockets, due to the cold. Since I had just got off work, and was innocent of any crimes, they took me by complete surprise, and I almost resisted their aggressiveness. They claimed that they had to roust me, because somebody fitting my description had robbed a liquor store- miles away, in Hollywood. " Should I have filed a complaint?
1983 12: Noon - Los Angeles, California: I was driving home with my family in the car. A cop fell in behind me. As I approached an obstacle in the road, I swerved to avoid it. The cop was on my ass so close, that he never saw the obstruction, and passed right over it. He pulled us over, walked up to my front window and stated, "What the fuck is wrong with you. Are you fucking drunk?" Should I have filed a complaint?
1998 8 AM: El Segundo, California: I was driving down Sepulveda Blvd, near El Segundo Blvd., on my way to work at Mattel, wearing a shirt, tie, and an employee badge. I had a brake light out, and the cop pulled me over. He made me get out of the car, took my license away, and had me stand at the back of the car, while he ran my plates for several minutes. Clean. He came back and read me the riot act for driving around with a broken taillight, and a cracked windshield. It seemed that he wanted me to say something in retaliation, but I just wanted to get the ticket, and make it to work, before I was late. He laid my license on the trunk of my car, and started to walk away. I didn't want to go for the license until told to do so, but I was not sure if I was free to go. I called after him, and he spun quickly around on his heels, unsnapping his holster. Suddenly facing death, I almost broke out running, but figured that he would be willing to shoot me in the back. I stood there frozen as hundreds of commuters stared him down as they drove by. He said, pick up your property and get out of here. " Should I have filed a complaint?
