Union Hall |
|
3rd and Bank Street, Dayton. That's what it was. A union meeting
hall. But on a Saturday night, an enterprising young man could rent
it out, hire one of the local bands, pack it with teenagers, and
make himself a grip. It was never a nice place, but it was dark
inside, so it was a good place to hook up with some DFA's.

Vanguards

Gang: Members: ???
?
Based in and around the classic
west Dayton area, around Roosevelt HS. This gang had some vague
political agendas, but although associated, I was not affiliated,
so I don't know what they were. They chose black as their colors.

Dorothy Wade |
Vocalist. The
best young female vocalist I have ever heard. She was
too young to do the 70's music trip, but she migrated
to LA in the '80's and did some session work, and
even a video for the Dayton Homies.

Wampler's Ball Room |
|
One of Dayton's out of
the way venues, often rented out by the Shriners for
some of their lodge parties. Many of Dayton's local
bands competed for these gigs. The names Tillman
McGwyer and Lonnie Thrasher come to mind, as they
were among the lead Shriners that would book the
bands. You aint partied until you party with these old boys... and
their women.. |

Wendell's Bootery |
Vendor.

Biography: After Flagg Brothers platform shoes fell from
grace, this was the place to go if you wanted your feet to look
good. They had all the Italian animal skin cuts, in virtually every
pastel color, to match your plumage. I bought a pair of brown suede
knickers boots one time. Pops was hot as hell when he found out I
paid $80. for those shoes. ($80. was eighty dollars back in 1970)

Drummer. This
was the drummer that taught the rest of the drummers
in Dayton, how to play behind singers. He maintained
a flawless pocket, while accenting every step of the
singing group's choreography. (Kevin Hurt copped this
style, but was better at it because of his superior
upper body strength) Terry left the band at some
point before they hit it big, and supposedly moved to
Jamaica. He was also a talented commercial artist. (slang:
He could draw his ass off.)

Trumpet. In the late
sixties, after early training in jazz, trumpeter Roderick (Rod)
Wilson began playing R&B with "Big Waist (Jerry Hawes) and the
Bandits". The group included saxophonist Michael Allamby, bassist
Tyrone Crum (later of Faze-O), and John and Steve Harden. In the
early seventies, he played with the "Ohio Syndicate", and later,
the "Dayton Originals", which included Jessie Partridge on guitar.
Currently, Roderick is performing gospel jazz with his group
"Roderick Wilson and Sun Star". He has a CD released called SHOPA
(show-pay), Expressions in Gospel Jazz, which was produced by Dean
Hummons, formerly of the groups SUN and DAYTON. SHOPA is receiving
exposure around the country.
The soul of Dayton in the 60's. Before
we discovered FM, there was only AM radio. Music was generally intergrated
back then, and we had to get a little Elvis with our Supremes, but
Black Music was coming into it's own, and topping the charts, so
white radio played what they had to play.

About 70 miles north
of Dayton, in Lima, Ohio, Carol and Carl Johnson had a little
night spot that pulled players from all over
the tri-state area (Michigan, Ohio, Indiana). She
rallied some of Dayton's best acts into the club over
the years, (Lakeside, The Bad Bunch, The Image,
Satori, The Different Shades of Brown) and they would
pack it out, even in knee deep snow storms. If you've
never partied at the Club Utopia, you probably were not a
true player.

Members: Tommy Henderson Quinn Moorman
Ronnie Ditto Phillip Buxton Kenny Renfrow

Biography. Little information has surfaced
concerning this group. It took our think tank 2 weeks
just to recall the name of the group, but we recalled
that they had a record out once called "Gloria"
The music for that record was recorded by The
Excursions, a band that eventually
evolved into the core of the Young
Underground/Lakeside Express band.
