Formula LX-23
Formula LX-23 was started in 1978 by members of a short lived group named Renissance (originators- Jerry Johnstone {Guitar} & Victor Pate{Guitar}). The name Formula LX-23 was created out of a dispute on the naming this new band. The original members - Frank Jones (Trombone), Victor Pate (guitar), Virgil Smith (tenor sax& flute), Luther 'Luke' Wright III (bass), & 'Chip' Pallard (alto sax), were arguing over various names for the band when Frank yelled "Just name it some Damn letters and numbers!", and then Victor said "Hell, LX23!". Later Formula was added when a club owner asked what LX-23 meant, and Frank said "I think it's a Formula." Anyway Formula LX-23 featured a high powered horn section consisting of Frank, Virgil, & Tulani Refaro (Baritone, Tenor, Alto, & Saprono Saxes), The Vocal acrobatics of Keith 'Rick' Combs and Frances 'Renee' Wright, & the Funk-Rock r! ! hythm section of Jesse Partridge (guitar), Micheal 'Jake' Jefferson (drums), Luke, & Victor. Formula LX-23 performed 15 Earth, Wind & Fire covers along with many late 70's & early 80's hits. The quality vocals of Ricky & Renee excited many venues. LX-23 also featured a 'Silver City' & 'BW Duckbutter' stage props (explosions, lights, mirrors, D.J.s & wild costumes). Victor & Jesse utilized many guitar effects/synths to cover for keyboards. Formula LX-23 had one '45' release in 1981 'Voyage to Infinity'. The group survived a number of member changes and finally ended in 1986 (8yrs). Many Dayton groups were influenced by this Dayton-made Top-40 Band.
