Lakeside Park

Amusement Park in Dayton, through the 1960's. It was a full blown permanent carnival, located within the local community. It was within walking distance for an enterprising youngster. There was a Kiddie Land area, complete with silly mirrors, and bumper cars. There were 2 roller coasters, a modern, but tame one called the "Wild Mouse" and the old wooden framed one called the "Wild Cat". According to legend, one or two people fell from the WIld Cat, over the years. There was something called the Bullet, and a mild rollercoaster with a convertible top. It was kind of a tunnel of love, but I believe that it was also called the "Caterpillar" In the evenings there was a large Bingo Hall over-looking the entire park. The park eventually closed as LeSourdsville Lake, and Kings Island became popular. Black entrepreneur, George Tuck took over the grounds, and created the Lakeview Palladium.

Lakeview Palladium

Dayton's favorite intimate concert venue, run by George Tuck. The former amusement park, and bingo hall became the entertainment spot of the 70's featuring the Motown Revue, The Delfonics, Jerry Butler, BloodStone, The Moments, The Ohio Players, and numerous Battles of the Local Bands.

Larry Kidd

Trumpet/Vocals Another one of the Roosevelt High School trained musicians, tutored by Mr. Sutton. He broke into the game as first trumpet for the Image until he roke camp and joined the Air Force. When he returned stateside, he became a member of Record Player's horn section, and helped to lead the band as a vocalist, (and Don Juan). Best Song: Disco Nights - GQ.

Bio. Sometimes called the Ohio Player's farm team, as members of the group graduated into positions with the Players as their members moved on. These guys were tight. Always performed as a self-contained group, and they mastered the vocal realm. I once saw Chet and Diamond absolutely blow the Nomads (Lakeside) away in the Roosevelt auditorium.

Mallory Pool/Park

City Swimming Pool, located  in south west Dayton, through the 1960's. Many a hot and lazy summer day was spent splashing in this municipal pool. Located on Germantown Pike, it was the only full fledged pool, wit a diving board, in the hood, I believe. There was also a pool at Bomberger Park, but it was (kind of) for the East side of Dayton (if you get my drift). Westwood park/school also had a small pool, but nothing the size of Mallory's unless I am mistaken.

Ken "The Kid" Marcellus

instrumentalist, dancing, theatre, and television programming and

early 80's. Currently involved in the music ministry at St.
James/Resurrection Catholic Church, free-lancing with a variety of groups
from Old School to Gospel Jazz.

Mayo's Skating Rink - The Mayo Family

The Dayton Music Guide is dedicated to the generation of great memories from the "Good.Old.Days". We would be remiss in our duty, if we don't mention Skating. This was one of our favorite pastimes besides a good Talent Show, and it was all about music, and some serious dancing on wheels. This was the main Skating Venue in the late 1950's, the place with the Donkey Statue in the front yard.
(Thanks for reminding me, Patricia...)

 Reggie "moon" Morgan

Guitar: Started his career as the lead guitarist for Crystal Love in 1973.  He was a long time friend of William Shelby since 8 years old.  He was not familiar with R&B music as such because he always played heavy rock and roll, and lot of Jimi Hendrix and Parliament Funkadelic.  The band was 3 pc for almost a year, He was responsible for all treble parts, keyboard lines, strings and horns.  This taught Reggie to be one of the best "pocket guitarist" in Dayton.

After the disbandment of Crystal Love He started a group call "Fantasy" This group lived and played in and around Detroit until returning back to Dayton in 1979. Then he played with "Gem City Starship", which spun off into a group known as Phoenix.

Keyboard/Vocals "Pain" Who will ever forget this Ohio Player's hit, performed vocally by Walt. He left the player's early, and missed much of their success, but he still managed to get the "Rolls Royce" that he asked for in one of his solo records. Later he joined the P-Funk Thang, and helped pen the classic "Knee Deep". Recently he has produced fellow Ohioan, James Ingram, whose latest record features '90's remakes of his classic love songs.

A darned good story John Mortimer

Vocals, drums, guitar, keyboards and bass, choreography and musical arrangements
Blessed with a pretty decent set of ears, and a desire to see the ENTIRE
group look good, John waqs an original member of London Fog & The Continentals. He learned harmony with his uncle's group, The original Majestics, (we're talkin 50's). At their rehearsals, they let him fill in for whoever didn't show up.(Information please)

Vocals/Baritone One of the original Nomads (Lakeside). Left the group to pursue other interests.

Keith Nash

Drums/Vocals A drummer's drummer. Always in the pocket with consistent timing, and above average technique. Not a power drummer, but not a lightfoot either. Keith probably had the sweetest, most expensive drum set in town. He worked his way up through the ranks, landing eventually with Slave, towards the end of their run, after he traveled to L.A. with Record Player.
Best Song: Disco Nights - GQ.

One of the few GOSPEL groups on our list. New Harvest is one the most promising new gospel groups on the road, garnering both a 1997 first place trophy in their first talent show, and a third place trophy in the Tuskeegee Airmen Talent Show in 1997 in the company of rap music, R & B, and dance. Their heartfelt commitment to the Gospel, their soul-stirring musicality, and their show-stopping stage persona combine to forge an artistry that is at one time both a revival and a redefinition of contemporary urban/R&B.
