3rd St. Dayton
Biography: A really nice middle of the road men's
clothing store. Their prices were not real high, and their quality
of vines was not real low. This store also had an excellent
selection of brims. It was the place to go for a pair of Levies,
because they used to honor that "no rip guaranty" that Levy-Struass
used to have. You could buy some jeans, wear them until they started
to fade, take your pocket knife, and rip the seam, and take them
back for a brand new pair. Darned it was easy to be a player, back
in the 60's.

Biography This mail order company was based in one of the
Southern States, or New Jersey. Nobody seems to recall exactly where
it was, even though we all ordered hat, shoes, and other regalia,
required to compliment a player's wardrobe. The Flagg Bros. catalog
circulated all over the Dayton area, so you could find just the
right shoe, send them a money order, and 3 to 6 weeks later, you
would get your shoes in the mail. They specialized in Platforms, and

By the Mid-Seventies, Dayton was in full blossom. The
Vietnam War was over, and many of us were hitting the books, some
in faraway campuses, and some at Central State, Wright State and
Sinclair. The party was on, and none of the old clubs could hold
all of us anymore, so the big concerts (Parliament, Earth Wind &
Fire, Isaac Hayes, Mandrill, Rick James) had to move their shows
into this concert venue. During the week it was the home of the
Dayton Gems Hockey team, so when we came to party on Saturday night,
they would cover up the ice with plywood, but your feet would still
freeze.

Biography: Look. I'm going to go ahead and say it. This
was a good place to pick up a pair of slacks, or a nice knit shirt,
if you wanted to look good - tonight. But you knew that once you put
this stuff in the cleaners, you might as well play basketball in it.
Henry was a really cool, old dude. His prices were always right, and
he would always work with a brother on a layaway plan. He had one of
the best gangster hat, and derby selections in town.
Radio Personality: Mr. Henry did the morning gospel
hour on Dayton's WDAO. His show started around 4 AM, and he would
play contemporary gospel music, and provide some morning inspiration
and ministering. If you were a young man in Dayton, in the early
70's, this was the last voice that you wanted to hear on your car
radio, because on the one hand, it meant that unless you had an
8-track in your car, you would have to do without the "funk"
for an hour, but even more important, it meant that you had stayed
out way too late, and Stanley would make you feel guilty for whatever
you were doing all night...
"Balif,
whack his pee-pee..." (Sorry this is a real
private joke.)
Quote.

3 AM but legs, so get my daughter
home well before 3." |

Guitar When we rehearsed at the house with his
older brother Mike, we used to get a kick out of this youngster,
when he would try to pick up his brother's guitar. Man did we miss
the point! This kid will probably go down in history as having played
the all time best R & B guitar solo ever, as a member of the
group Slave That performance was cosmic, and will no doubt
be a classic that stands up alongside solo performed by Alex Van
Halen. (Information please)
Best Song: Slide - Slave
Guitar Once played lead axe for the Image,
but he just kind of faded out of the game after that, which was
a real shame because he was one of the best rhythm guitarist I've
ever seen. His chord structure was in a word -sweet. After
a date with the Delfonics, lead singer Poochie compared
him to the great Philly guitarist, Tom Bell. Probably his greatest
contribution was as mentor and role model for his younger brother
Mark. (Information please)

We would be remiss in our duty, if we don't mention Skating. This
was one of our favorite pastimes besides a good Talent Show, and
it was all about music, Like "Twine Time" or Marvin Gaye's
"Grapevine" and some serious dancing on wheels. Sometimes

Biography. Most Daytonians never saw these ladies
perform. They hardly appeared in Dayton, but were
instead part of the Stone Soul Image Revue, that went
out on big out of town dates. On these dates the
Image Band Played one set, and then they backed up
the first part of the Image girls, who did an exotic
dance routine. The band would take a break, and when
they returned, the second half of the Image girls
came out and sang a 15-20 minute set. The Image
singers would come out and do one big headline show
to end the evening.
The original members were
Carletta, Kathy, Leslie, Sherry, and Desiree . - Carletta
Carmen, Denise, and Cheryl, were
the sexy Image Dancers who warmed up the crowd in
their revealing "sizzler dresses". They
would draw the guys to club and the singers would
bring the girls. The results were full houses at the
Clock Bar and Utopia.- Reggie Crutcher.

Biography. This singing group kept showing up at talent shows,
but they must have been somewhat indifferent about having a singing
career, because they never seemed to expand their influence, or
be consistent about building an organization. When they did show
up, they had a pretty good sound.
The bandshell was one
of the best venues in the Dayton area. Designed as an open air community
concert venue, on Dayton's north side, it became a favorite place
for some summer funk. The unique acoustical properties afforded
by the shell, meant that the music and singing would reverberate
all over the island park, so that despite the hard physical structure
of the seats, which was brutal on the butt, no seat was a bad seat.

Vocals/Percussion One of the founding members
of the Stone Soul Image, remaining with the group from it's beginning
to the end. After the great band revolution of the 1970's killed
off singing groups in Dayton, he picked up the Congas and joined
the group Satori, and later Record Player. In 1982 he headed to
Los Angeles where he and Reggie Crutcher formed the group Arogance.
After a couple of failed Recording Deals, he finally took up production
and A&R as Music Director for the fledgling Pick Records label.
Percussion/Vocals Took center stage for a brief
run with Steve Arrington's Hall of Fame In high school, he
planned a career as a toy and games developer, but the music bit
him sometime during his college days. (Information please)
