Famous Clothes |
Vendor. 3rd St. Dayton
Biography: A really nice middle of the road men's
clothing store. Their prices were not real high, and their quality of
vines was not real low. This store also had an excellent selection of
brims. It was the place to go for a pair of Levies, because they used to
honor that "no rip guaranty" that Levy-Strauss used to have. You could
buy some jeans, wear them until they started to fade, take your pocket
knife, and rip the seam, and take them back for a brand new pair. Darned
it was easy to be a player, back in the 60's.

Flagg Brothers
 |
Vendor.
(information please)
Biography This mail order company was based in one of the
Southern States, or New Jersey. Nobody seems to recall exactly where
it was, even though we all ordered hat, shoes, and other regalia,
required to compliment a player's wardrobe. The Flagg Bros. catalog
circulated all over the Dayton area, so you could find just the right
shoe, send them a money order, and 3 to 6 weeks later, you would get
your shoes in the mail. They specialized in Platforms, and 'gators.

mostly top 40. When last seen in Kettering, Ohio back in '98 they

The
Great Gatsby |
Another Dayton Night Spot in the late 70's
that featured live entertainment.

|
|
Hara Arena |
By the Mid-Seventies, Dayton was in full blossom. The
Vietnam War was over, and many of us were hitting the books, some
in faraway campuses, and some at Central State, Wright State and
Sinclair. The party was on, and none of the old clubs could hold
all of us anymore, so the big concerts (Parliament, Earth Wind &
Fire, Isaac Hayes, Mandrill, Rick James) had to move their shows
into this concert venue. During the week it was the home of the
Dayton Gems Hockey team, so when we came to party on Saturday night,
they would cover up the ice with plywood, but your feet would still
freeze.

Henry's Fashions |
Vendor. 3rd Street, Trotwood/Crown Point Area
Biography: Look. I'm going to go ahead and say it. This
was a good place to pick up a pair of slacks, or a nice knit shirt,
if you wanted to look good - tonight. But you knew that once you put
this stuff in the cleaners, you might as well play basketball in it.
Henry was a really cool, old dude. His prices were always right, and
he would always work with a brother on a layaway plan. He had one of
the best gangster hat, and derby selections in town.

Stanley Henry |
Radio Personality: Mr. Henry did the morning gospel
hour on Dayton's WDAO. His show started around 4 AM, and he would
play contemporary gospel music, and provide some morning inspiration
and ministering. If you were a young man in Dayton, in the early
70's, this was the last voice that you wanted to hear on your car
radio, because on the one hand, it meant that unless you had an
8-track in your car, you would have to do without the "funk"
for an hour, but even more important, it meant that you had stayed
out way too late, and Stanley would make you feel guilty for whatever
you were doing all night...
"Bailiff,
whack his pee-pee..." (Sorry this is a real
private joke.)

BIO. Dear Sir - A few other points about The
Imperials that I think is worth noting is that back in the late 60s' and
early 70s' the group was booked practically every weekend playing at
Wamplers, the Democratic Club, Lakeside and other functions around town.
The band was constantly booked on the college scene at Central State,
Ohio University, Miami, Ball State, Ohio State, Wittenburg and quite a
few dawn dances at Wilberforce University. When all of the members were
still in high school or just in the early part of college the band was
back up for both the Temptations and Spinners in Muncie, Indiana. Back
then singing groups only traveled with a lead guitar, bass and drummer.
Local groups would provide the remaining portion of the band for the
gig. The group was also the opening act for Curtis Mayfield and the
Impressions on at least two gigs in Columbus and Cincinnati, Ohio. For
such young guys at the time, the band was really tight and was a monthly
regular for local fraternities, sororities and various club dances in
Indianapolis, Toledo and northern Kentucky. If you remember Union Hall
after the local football games, then you probably heard The Imperials
play a time or two. After the band broke up, Shawn Sandridge went on to
play with both Sun and Dayton and is on several albums.
