The Draft
A lot of us that came out of high school before 1973 had to come up with some options to avoid the draft. His story was not unique. The Image lost Harvey Lee Ellison to the draft, for a minute. He actually got dragged down to Cincy, for induction before they discovered that he still had a bullet fragment in his chest from a youthful indiscretion . I had a different plan. My Granny lived up in Detroit, so me and my cousin, who was also at risk, actually took the short bus ride to the Canadian boarder crossing, and casually walked to freedom. Fortunately it was just a trial run, so we came back, and we both got college deferments, which got us comfortably out of the draft.
