Born
in Dayton, Ohio, Derek Floyd's love for music was instilled deep in his heart at
an early age. He sang with his sister, Cyndi, and they signed with Philadelphia
International Records and released two singles. Cyndi broke up the duo when she
found the Lord while they were touring in Los Angeles. Derek continued in
secular music, touring with Bobby Womack in the 1970s and writing the top 10
hit, "Reaching for the World" recorded by Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. He
performed regularly in nightclubs until finally surrendering his talents, as
well as his heart, to Jesus Christ.
From 1982 to 1987, Floyd was featured as an on-air soloist on the Inspirational
Network. He wrote and performed several promotional spots, including the
Religion in Media Angel award winning "You and Us Together." In November 1983,
his first Christian album, "Arrival" was released, followed by the single, "It's
All taken Care Of." In 1987, Derek was nominated for two Gospel Music
Association Dove Awards: Male Vocalist of the Year, and Black Contemporary
Gospel Album of the Year for his 1986 recording, "Once Again."
In August 1988, Derek was chosen to serve as Director of Music for the opening
of the new Charlotte Coliseum. He wrote, scored and directed all of the music
for the opening ceremonies at which Dr. Billy Graham gave the dedication. He was
selected to sing at the kickoff of Billy Graham's crusade in Charlotte several
years later.
In April 1990, the CD "Like Never Before" was released on Diadem Records,
followed by his 1991 release, "On The Horizon." In August 1989, Derek returned
to college (after 20 years) and graduated May 1, 1993 with a degree in Biblical
Studies.
His song, "Hero For Today" appeared on Bob Hope's NBC Special, "A Salute to
America" and Walt Disney's Fourth of July Celebration on CBS and after September
11th, on Good Morning America and The Today Show.
Derek currently serves as the Minister of Music at Christ Covenant Church in
Greensboro, North Carolina. He continues to travel throughout the United States
on a part-time basis ministering encouragement and joy through his gift of
music. When at home, Derek is effectively using his talents as a songwriter,
collaborating with his wife of over twenty years, Marlene. They reside in
Greensboro with their "miracle" nine-year-old son, Cameron.
